Manchester Medsin Global Health Conference ’09

From March 28th to 29th 2009, the student charity Medsin will host 550 delegates interested in health, development, ethics and politics for two days of controversial and topical workshops, debates, campaigns and exhibitions.

Entitled ‘Healthy Interventions‘, the Global Health Conference 2009 will stage four panels of expert speakers to discuss topical and controversial issues in international health.

550 delegates interested in health, development, ethics and politics will converge on Manchester for two days of workshops, debates, campaigns and exhibitions. The new state of the art and environmentally conscious University Place conference venue will be the backdrop to an exciting and thought provoking forum.

It’s that time of year again – time to choose next year’s committee. We’ll also be thinking about everything we’ve done this year and what we should be aiming to do next. Open to everyone who’s interested in increasing access to medicines and increasing research into neglected diseases in Edinburgh and further afield. Just bring your enthusiasm. And we’re going to the pub afterwards – three legged pubcrawl!

Medsin Scottish Global Health Day

Medsin-UK Scottish Regional Conference Saturday 7th March – Edinburgh

Medsin-Edinburgh is delighted to be hosting the Scottish Regional Conference. The theme of the conference will be ‘The Social Determinants of Health’, following the release of Michael Marmot’s WHO Report of the same name in September. The event will run from 10-5pm with accommodation available on Friday and Saturday night for those who need it. We have a fantastic speaker line-up and the afternoon will include a ‘Question Time’ style discussion to give you plenty of opportunity to ask questions and share ideas about how to tackle health inequalities locally and globally! The cost for the day will be £5, including lunch and coffee/tea/snacks.

UAEM will be hosting a workshop there on Access to Medicines.

Neglected diseases talk

Based on last years – this is set to be an inspiring and thought provoking talk.

Professor Alan Fairlamb from Dundee University is a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow, Professor of Biochemistry and Head of the Division of Biological Chemistry and Drug Discovery.

As one of the 250 scientists involved in the genome sequencing of the parasites that cause sleeping sickness, Chagas disease and leishmaniasis, his research career is devoted to the development of better treatments for these neglected tropical diseases.

He is also a member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (WHO) and discovered trypanothione, a novel and attractive target for rational drug design for trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis.

EUSA AGM success

UAEM successfully passed their motion on access the medicines with unanimous approval mandating EUSA to campaign for our ideals. This recent success has shown our capability for raising student support!
